The villagers produced a handcart and some of the boys lifted Asbjorn into it. Part of the armed multitude was happy to escort Asbjorn to the monastery while the remainder kept watch on the ship, but none of them stepped up to pull the cart. So, Frodi and Atli had to do it.
The monastery lay at the foot of a slope beside a stream about a mile from the little fjord. It was centered on a small stone church. Timber and wattle buildings adjoined this church on the north side. There were sheep grazing on the hillside and above them were the houses of a village.
The escorts led them to a large timber house across the stream from the church. Two of the escorts went inside the house to tell the master of the monastery the reason for the strangersâ visit.
Presently, three monks came out with the escorts. One of these monks was very old. His hair was completely gone; only white wisps remained, except for wild bushy eyebrows. His green eyes were red and rheumy, his nose wide; his chin jutted. He said something in Welsh to Ulf, who removed his eye rag. The others recoiled at the sight, but the old man merely nodded and exchanged words with Ulf.
âHis name is Madok. He remembers me,â Ulf said.
âWho is he?â Atli asked.
âThey call him the prior. He is the master of this place, such as they have one.â
Prior Madok approached the cart. He lifted the blanket covering Asbjornâs legs. He nodded, his face sad. He then spoke to the other monks, who took up the handles of the cart and pulled it back across the ford.
âThe prior has agreed to help,â Ulf said.
âWe can pay,â Atli said. âAlthough it will not be a lot.â
Madok chuckled.
âHe says that usually when people like you come, it is to take, and not to give,â Ulf said.
âAnother time,â Atli said.
Madok chuckled at this too.
âHe says that they havenât much, and weâre welcome to all of it â another time,â Ulf said.
